Montenegro People Ulcinj Beaches
The finest beaches in Montenegro are in the Ulcinj-Bar South Coast region

The Montenegrin coast is 293 kilometers long and is home to some of the finest beaches on the Adriatic Sea. The beaches here are the major reason why Montenegro is expected to be the most rapidly growing resort destinations worldwide, in coming years.

Many beaches on the Montenegrin South Coast are now in compliance with Blue Flag standards for safety and services, water quality and environmental manegement. The manegement of this exqusite corner of the Mediterranean is entrusted to a special company for maritime resources which ensures that this public wealth is open and avaibale to every guest.

In addition to the beaches described below, there are many more small beaches, sea caves, and hidden valleys reachable only by boat or water taxi. It is possible to hire various watercraft or simply take a boat taxi and go on exotic shoreline crusing.

Velika Plaza also known as Plazha Mahe or Long Beach Velika Plaza -- Ulcinj's Velika Plaza, also known as Long Beach (and Plazha Madhe in Albanian), is one of Montenegro's great natural assets - it is the country's longest contiguous beach and its most famous Adriatic beach. Some locals like to call this 13-kilometer stretch of Montenegro's coast, the "Copacabana of Ulcinj". It spreads out from Djerane Cape to Ada Bojana. The beach is well-know for being covered with the finest sand (the diameter of a grain is 0.1-5mm) with such a fine quality that it is reputed to have medicinal and therapeutic qualities. It is rich with minerals, good for those suffering from rheumatism and other illnesses. This beach is distinctive for a long shallow belt of sea water.

Ada Bojana river and beach Ada Bojana -- At the edge of Montenegro's South Coast is Ada Bojana, a popular destination with international travelers to Montenegro, and perhaps most telling, among Montenegrins as well. The area is known for its daily fresh fish catch served at Ada Bojana restaurants, the local nudist beaches, and for some of the most scenic portions of Velika Plaza, attracting throngs of beach-goers to this Adriatic destination on any given day.

Valdano Bay Beach Valdanos Bay Beach -- a horsehoe-shaped natural water body, is situated about four miles to the north of Ulcinj's Old Town, between Mavrijen and Mendra. The bay's end point falls steeply and suddenly into the sea. The beach at Valdanos is single, composed of round stones 1 to 20 cm in diameter.

Ulcinj's Small Beach -- Small beach is the 360-meter city beach adjacent to Old Town Ulqin and Ulcinj's city center area. The beach is considered highly suitable for children since the sand is fine and comforting, and the sea here has a shallow bottom which goes some distance into the sea. At the very end of this city beach, beneath the Old Town castle walls, is a small Ulcinj port (360 m) with a well managed pier. Small Beach is also quite popular due to the numerous restaurants, beer bars, cafes, and shops situated adjacent to the strand walkway along the beach. This video provides a view of Small Beach during summer season.

Ulcinj's Ladies Beach -- So-called "Ladies Beach" is situated along Ulcinj's coastal pine forest, just south of Hotel Mediteran Resort. The beach here is known for its therapeutic springs of sulphurous water. Ladies Beach is part of a succession of small natural beaches and quiet covers that dot the coastline north of Velika Plaza.

The Ulcinj-Bar South Coast region of Montenegro traces its history to the prehistoric times of the Illyrians, a people of Indo-European origin. The region's beauty, location, and climate, has long been coveted by Adriatic region conquerors, and beyond. Justilian the Byzantine Emperor captured and fortified it, as did the Nemanjic's, the Balsic's, the Venetians and the Turks. Ulcinj's capture in 1183 by the Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja, confirmed the city's role as one of the most important settlements on the coast.       more Montenegro South Coast history

The Ulcinj region is an exciting "base camp" for travel excursions in the immediate area, and throughout Montenegro and neighboring countries. Here is a sampling of some popular day-trips and excursions.

Lake Skadar National Park, at 44 kilometers in length, is truly enormous and one of the national scenic treasures of Montenegro. Skadar is located about seven kilometers from the Adriatic Sea coast.

Stari Bar, the Old Bar Fortress, is one of four ancient fortress-towns accessible to travelers to the South Coast region. Dating to the 9th Century, Stari Bari is now an open-air museum situated on a 4-hectare hilltop just four kilometers from the Adriatic sea.

The olive groves and pebble beach at Valdanos are worth a visit. Valdanos Bay is a horsehoe-shaped natural water body situated between Mavrijen and Mendra, just four miles to the north of Ulcinj's Old Town. As for the olive groves at Valdanos, for centuries Ulcinj has been an active olive-growing region, and according to Ulcinj tradition a man cannot be married until he has planted at least one olive tree.

Bird Watching at the Ulcinj Salt Works Factory, a protected eco-system, is one of the world's top birdwatching spots since the region is a major resting point for over 200 bird species on their migration paths. On a typical winter day, 20,000 or more birds are nested here.

The Bar Seaport is a natural harbor and the main seaport of Montenegro, located at the foot of the Rumija mountain-mass. Bar Seaport is on the north edge of the Ulcinj coastal region. Bar is famous for being the summer home of Montenegrin Duke Nikola at the end of the 19th century.
