Valdanos Bay, a horsehoe-shaped natural water body, is situated about four miles to the north of Ulcinj's Old Town, between Mavrijen and Mendra. The bay's end point falls steeply and suddenly into the sea. The 600-meter long beach at Valdanos is single, composed of round stones 1 to 20 cm in diameter.
Because of its shape and location, Valdanos Bay is naturally protected from both southern and northen winds, and has long sheltered ships during major storms.
In 1833, a ship bound from Alexandria was ordered by the UIcinj harbormaster to a 40-day quarantine until ship-board concerns for disease were past.
